What is EnSite Precision and EnSite X?
EnSite Precision and EnSite X (collectively referred to as EnSite Precision to simplify the article) are cardiac anatomy mapping systems that facilitate the treatment of abnormal heart rhythms.
The EnSite Precision enables the practising electrophysiologist tolocalise the origin of anirregular heartbeat in the shortest possible time and map it. The system not only allows several catheter electrodes to appear simultaneously, but alsoreflects the movement of ablation catheters and diagnostic catheters in the heart live .
For whom and for which treatments is EnSite Precisionsuitable?
During the creation of a 3D electro-anatomical model, the position of the catheters is tracked permanently and in real time by EnSite Precision. This technique makes the EnSite system suitable for various cardiological treatments such as the treatment of complex and abnormal arrhythmias, for example:
– ventricular tachycardias and
– Atrial fibrillation.
EnSite Precision for electrophysiology labs
The EnSite Precision 3D mapping system is ideally suited for today’s high technical requirements in electrophysiology laboratories. The electrophysiologist can use it to perform a morphological adjustment in the shortest possible time in order to obtain information about the origin or source of the irregular heartbeat.
With the tools of the EnSite Precision System, electrophysiologists can alsoobtain precise and fast images of the heart. This is also possible for different treatments where a higher density and greater consistency is required.

The following is required to use the system:
- EnSite Precision Surface Electrode Kit
- EnSite Precision impedance data
- EnSite Precision Amplifier
- EnSite Precision Field Frame
- EnSite Precision Cool Point
- EnSite Precision Ampere RF Generator
- EnSite Precision Link Sensor Enabled
- EnSite Precision TactiSys Quartz
EnSite Precision surface electrode kit
The EnSite Precision surface electrode kit consists of a system reference surface electrode and six surface electrodes, which are attached to the patient in pairs:
- anterior and posterior,
- left to right lateral and
- superior (neck) to inferior (leg).
The three pairs of electrodes form three orthogonal axes (X-Y-Z), with the heart in the centre.
Two PRS are also used with the EnSite Precision 3D Mapping System:
- one PRS anterior and
- one PRS posterior.
The PRS are connected to the patient via self-adhesive patches and primarily serve as sensors against metal distortions and patient movements. During model acquisition, both impedance-based points and magnet-based points are acquired by a Sensor Enabled Tool.

EnSite Precision impedance data
Catheter position and navigation, both conventional and sensor-guided, is based on the impedance field generated by the EnSite surface electrodes.
When the surface electrodes are connected to the EnSite Precision 3D Mapping System, an 8 kHz signal is sent alternately through each pair of surface electrodes, creating a transthoracic electric field.
Conventional or sensor-based electrophysiology catheters are connected to the EnSite Precision 3D Mapping System and advanced to the heart. As a catheter enters the transthoracic field, each catheter electrode measures the voltage, timed to the generation of the gradient and along each axis. Based on the measured voltages, compared to the voltage gradient on all three axes, the EnSite system calculates the three-dimensional position of each catheter electrode for all electrodes simultaneously.
What options does EnSite Precision offer?
EnSite Precision offers:
- physicians,
- specialised cardiologists and
- hospitals
the possibility oftreating patients’ abnormal heart rhythms or cardiac arrhythmias automatically, flexibly and with precision.
The EnSite Precision 3D Mapping System is suitablefor the treatment of patients with cardiac arrhythmias. By using the system, doctors, cardiologists and cardiac clinics can obtainprecise details of the cardiac anatomy. With the help of magnetic and impedance-based technology, it is possible to obtain anatomically accurate models and maps of the cardiac anatomy of cardiac patients in order to treat them efficiently. The Sensor Enabled function in particular has a major impact in this area and helps to maintain a consistently high quality of the 3D map .

What advantages does EnSite Precision offer?
EnSite Precision is designed for flexibility, precession and automation in cardiological examinations of the anatomy of the heart . In a classic catheter ablation procedure to treat cardiac arrhythmias, a small area of cardiac tissue is heated with the tip of the ablation catheter using radiofrequency energy and thus obliterated. As a result, the tissue is no longer able to conduct or maintain the cardiac arrhythmia. The EnSite Precision 3D Mapping System provides an internal view of the heart, allowing physicians and specialised cardiologists tovisualise the patient’s cardiac anatomy and navigate to ultimately perform more precise ablation therapy .
In addition, the system not only enables the imaging and detailed visualisation of the heart anatomy, it also reduces the risk of potentially exposing patients to excessive radiation. The potential risk of radiation exposure is reduced with EnSite Precision through the use of visualised catheters.
Another advantage of using EnSite Precision over traditional treatment approaches is the efficiency and individualisation of the system. When mapping the heart anatomy using the system, doctors, specialised cardiologists and hospital cardiology departments have the opportunity tomap the patient’s heart chambers with various electrophysiological catheters and thusadapt them individually totheir own approach and to the heart or patient.
