Circular Economy
For EU Commissioner Frans Timmermann it is clear: “Only with a circular economy can we achieve climate neutrality”.
In March 2020, the European Commission presented an Action Plan for the Circular Economy. The action plan is one of the most important building blocks of the European Green Deal and part of the new EU industrial strategy.
However, initially the focus was placed on sectors such as electronics and ICT, plastics, textiles and construction. The healthcare sector, which at 4.4% produces more CO2 emissions than aviation and shipping combined, was not in. the focus when the initiative began.
This is changing. In the webinar “Towards a More Circular, Sustainable and Economic Healthcare System in Europe”, representatives of the EU Commission, the European Parliament and the European Committee of the Regions emphasised the urgent need to extend the circular economy to the healthcare sector.
The benefits of the circular economy clearly articulated on the EU Parliament’s website make clear why this initiattive cannot halt at the gates of the healthcare sector.
