Case Study from Wolverhampton: Green Healthcare! How Remanufacturing Reduces Costs and Environmental Impact

At the World Congress of Cardiology in March 2023, it was highlighted that a single cardiac catheter lab can generate approximately 52 kg of potentially recyclable material in just one week. This amounts to over 1,300 tonnes annually. Drapes, gowns, gloves, plastic trays, syrin-ges, catheters, and angioplasty balloons are only a few examples of plastic products commonly used in cardiology. Whether used or not, most of these items are discarded without much consideration—often preemptively, for hygiene purposes or due to concerns over cross-contamination.

Safety with Sustainability

The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) has been actively working for years on its ambitious NetZero plan, aiming to reduce emissions and waste while maintaining high standards of care.

As part of this initiative, New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton has developed its own Green Plan to reduce environmental impact and promote sustainable healthcare. The progress of this approach is documented in the report Savings & Sustainability in the EP Lab. Remanufacturing plays a central role in this effort, with the hospital partnering with Vanguard AG to support these goals.

The initiative from Wolverhampton is one of many positive examples in recent years demonstrating the benefits of reusing medical products. Thousands of hospitals now use remanufactured products as part of their commitment to patient care and environmental responsibility.

Vanguard’s Role as a Partner to the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust

In 2023 alone, Vanguard helped save approximately 56 kg of plastic waste. Following a successful pilot phase, remanufactured products are now routinely used in procedures. Remanufacturing not only reduces the carbon footprint but also enables hospitals to achieve significant cost savings.
